Really hot!

She does this thing with her back legs -
it cracks me up...*laugh*

Okay, it's still really hot. In fact, it's getting hot enough that I'm not feeling smug anymore. We don't have air conditioning so it's getting pretty stuffy down here in the basement (though cooler than the rest of the house).

I wasn't aware of this until recently, but dogs play in slow motion when it's hot. Their tongues hang out the sides of their mouths. When they wrestle, they rise up on their hind legs slowly, moving their hips and twisting their bodies like they're doing Thai Chi.

They get creative about play, and find ways to play while lying prone in the grass - "I'll grab your jaw, then you grab mine, then we'll rest and do it again, okay?" They roll around a lot.

They sit and pant. The steal other dogs' water, step in the water, drink, drink, drink. They roll in worms, because...well, worms are kinda cool, you know?

At the small dog park last night, the humans sat on the grass instead of standing around like we usually do. The dogs ran in quick bursts, economizing their energy for more panting. The shade felt good. The humans centred entire conversations about breezes: "Did you feel that? Coming from the northeast?"

In short, it's summer and I'm loving it.
